What do Entrepreneurs do in a Recession
Recession did I hear someone say? Is there one going on at the moment?
The Secret tells us that what we think about, we bring about. If we focus on lack, we will get more lack. If we, however, look at what is going on around us and concentrate on the opportunities, doors start to open up and things start to move in the right direction.
Tip number one. Don’t watch the news. I made the mistake of listening in on the 10 o’clock news the other night and during the introductions at the beginning I heard…. ’so and so says, if we had known there was going to be a recession we would not have made a bid for the olympics…’ What!
John and I got so angry that we had to go for a swift walk to calm down. What sort of example does that set to the British Public who hang on to every word that is said by those in the media, even if they have no idea what they are talking about.
Cast your mind back to the olympics earlier this year. How fab did we all feel as the medals came rolling in. Imagine how even fabber that is going to be on home turf. The olympics are a shining goal for us all to look to and set ourselves targets to be there, cheering our athletes on. AND, let’s not forget – economies are cyclical! Things will turn around in time. Where will you be when that happens?
Tip number two. At times like this entrepreneurs become focussed, centered and eagle eyed. It is a time to really take stock of your business. You can’t stop a world recession (who said that..) but you can change the way you react to it. What opportunities are out there for you?
As a motivational coach I have clients who I meet with regularly to discuss goals, actions and deadlines. Do you think any of them have said to me ‘Oh Jill, there’s a recession. Can’t afford you any more’. Not one. In fact, my client bank is growing with people and organisations who understand that right now they need to concentrate more than ever on the detail, consistently review their goals and strategies and make changes where necessary AND they need deadlines to make sure those plans are actioned. That’s what I do with them and I have no problem in giving them a kick up the bum when they are slacking!
Nothing is impossible but the key is to react to what is going on around you in the most appropriate way. Sticking your head in the sand is not an option. Taking massive action whilst everyone around is holding pity parties is smart!
Couldn’t agree more – I for one put the blinkers on a little while ago. Got to stay positive, focused and out there!
I just want to say how pleased I am to discover I am not alone in banning the news; I do not want to hear the doom and gloom constantly spouted by the media. Most of it refers to “estimates” and “predictions” of further recession and poverty, which of course will come true if everyone believes it. Like Alan Sugar said the other week on GMTV, the media should have a “Happy Day” where they are only allowed to report on good and happy stories for one day a year (I think it should be one day a week). Happiness and positivity generates success (Read The Secret by Rhonda Burne if you don’t believe me!). I heard you speak at a conference a couple of years ago Jill and really enjoyed it; I love your energy and enthusiasm. I now run my own business, which I started last year. Wishing all you small business owners, especially women, lots of luck, happiness and success…Clare, from Ashford, Kent.
Too right! dont read the papers or listen to the news unless im in them telling them how i have turned the recession to my advantage! bring it on!!
