Find Some Space!
Some years ago, when I was a financial adviser, one of my clients said to me ‘Jill, you need to find some peace’! I really didn’t understand what she was on about until recently. I have just been reading a book by Eckhart Tolle called The Power of Now. It is quite heavy and sometimes (quite often really) I have to read paragraphs twice, but I am getting the gist of it.
This guy, Eckhart, had a spiritual ‘happening’ which lead to him spending a couple of years sitting on a bench contemplating the wonder of the world around him. He is now a spiritual teacher and counsellor and has made me realise that I have complete control over how I am feeling at any given time. I think he might have something you know and what my client was talking about to me was to find some space in my head and just ‘be’ for a while.
As an entrepreneur, that is not easy to do as I am constantly on the hunt for the next thing to do, but I have found that I do in fact need to step to one side of my chattering brain at times just to get some creativity into my life – it normally happens in the shower! As soon as I consciously separate myself from my brain, my emotions tend to stabilise and I start to breath evenly and deeply. Oxygen floods into my brain, I feel calm and in control and very much ‘in the moment’ and that seems to be when I get my most creative thoughts! Weird!
The main thing though is that it helps me through the mini crisis that are my life. I feel in control and safe in the moment, things start to fall into place, and anxiety disappears.
Before you label me as a ‘nutter’ (many have!), try it. The next time you feel like your head is about to explode, make a conscious effort to step aside from your thoughts, feel safe in the moment you are in, and look at your brain as though it is a separate entity. The panic will subside and you will then be able to move forward. Give it a go – or better still, buy the book and read it for yourself!
